CD’s
Often, we receive CD’s through
postal mail. These CD’s may come from AOL or EarthLink, and
contain installation files for the service. However, we might
also receive ‘free’ CD’s in the mail that we did not request,
and did not expect – from unknown sources. Creating CD’s is
quite easy. Creating CD labels is also easy. There is nothing to
stop someone from sending malicious software through the postal
mail, on a CD. If there is no return address, toss the CD. Do
not put it in your system. You should always check the integrity
of a CD before popping it into your system. Visit the website.
Send an email to the company, asking them if they sent you the
CD. If you decide to put the CD in your drive, make sure you
scan it with your virus protection software before running it.
Open ‘My Computer’ and right click on the drive that represents
your CD ROM, and check the properties of the CD. Make sure you
know what you are getting into before you allow that CD to run
on your system. This also applies to floppy disks. If you didn’t
make it, and you didn’t order it or expect it, take the safe
road, and throw it in the trash.
