How to Avoid Risks

When it comes to avoiding the risks, it is important to understand that there are three phases to total computer security. First, there are the products that you can purchase, or in some cases get for free, that will help protect your system. Next, there are steps that you must take to ensure that your system is protected. Finally, you must learn how to protect your identity when you are interacting with others online.

It may seem very daunting for someone who doesn’t know much about computers. But it is very easy to learn how to protect your system. You simply need to read the directions. If that doesn’t work for you, or if the directions you have are hard to understand, ask a trusted friend to help you out. You can also call your internet service provider, and ask them for help. Some will charge you for the time, while others will not. It doesn’t matter how you get it done, as long as it gets done – even if you have to pay a technical support person to help you out. The money you spend making sure your system is protected will save you quite a bit of time and money down the road.

For some, securing a computer can take a full day. For others, it may take a couple of hours or less. It depends on how secure your system is when you start. Make it a point to set aside the time that you need to make sure that your system is not only operating properly, but that it is secure. When most people get a new computer system, they want to get online, and start setting up their files, their favorites or bookmarks, or start downloading and installing software. Unless that software is security related, this is the worst thing you can do to a new computer system. Once you’ve gotten your new system out of the box, set up on the desk, and all plugged in, the next step is to protect the system – before you do anything else.

Once you’ve gone through all of the steps to ensure that your system is secure, there will be tasks that you will need to do in the future to ensure that it stays protected. You should schedule these tasks, and you can even have your computer do several of these tasks for you, by using the task scheduler. Take the time to set up the task scheduler. You may choose to have particular tasks run while at times that you know you will not be using the computer – but when it will be turned on. Sometimes, these tasks can slow your system down while they are running. It is important that you allow the task to complete. Do not stop it. It may be inconvenient for the short amount of time that it is running – but it is a vital operation.

Do not be intimidated by any of this. Your computer is simply a machine, and in most cases, if you are doing things wrong, it will tell you. Whether you have been around computers you entire life, or if you are a senior citizen who has just turned on a computer for the first time, you can protect yourself and your computer. If you can read, you can do this. It is a lot of information, and there are a lot of steps to take, but you do not have to be a computer whiz to take the steps. You don’t have to memorize any of this, or even really understand how a lot of it works. Simply print out the steps, then start at the top of the list, and work your way to the bottom.
