How to Avoid Risks

Personal Profiles

Personal profiles can be set up for chat rooms, forums, and instant messengers. This is another dangerous practice. These profiles ask for entirely too much identifying information. Common things that are asked are: Your real name, your nickname, your location, your age, your birth date, your marital status, your sex, your occupation, and your hobbies. Some even ask for your email address.

Think about those things for a minute, and then think about what an identity thief could do with all that information. That little bit of information could destroy your life. The best thing you can do, for your own protection, is to not fill out these profiles at all. Don’t give anyone anything other than your screen name, and stick to that
