How to Avoid Risks

Step 5: Make sure your operating system is up-to-date

Again, make sure that your operating system is up-to-date. This cannot be stressed enough. Those updates exist because the software developer’s security team – usually comprised of professional hackers – found security holes in the system. The updates are meant to close up those holes, making the system more secure. Once that is done, these professional hackers go back to work, trying to hack into the updated system – if and when they find another hole, they write a program to close it, and another update becomes available.

Set your operating system to check, download, and install updates automatically. This will further protect your system, in case you forget to check for updates yourself. Usually, all that is required of you is to restart your system. The updater does the rest of the work to ensure that your system is up-to-date.
