Step 5: Make sure your operating
system is up-to-date
Again, make sure that your
operating system is up-to-date. This cannot be stressed enough.
Those updates exist because the software developer’s security
team – usually comprised of professional hackers – found
security holes in the system. The updates are meant to close up
those holes, making the system more secure. Once that is done,
these professional hackers go back to work, trying to hack into
the updated system – if and when they find another hole, they
write a program to close it, and another update becomes
available.
Set your operating system to
check, download, and install updates automatically. This will
further protect your system, in case you forget to check for
updates yourself. Usually, all that is required of you is to
restart your system. The updater does the rest of the work to
ensure that your system is up-to-date.
